www.abnwtlegion.com 1 As His Majesty the King’s representative in Alberta, I am proud to lend my support to the 18th edition of the Military Service Recognition Book. In my role as Lieutenant Governor, I have attended several events honouring Canada’s veterans and have listened with great interest as they described their experiences to me. Many of these stories are filled with terrifying images of violence and combat, but just as many include tender memories of the friends they made overseas, many of whom did not have the good fortunate to return home. Everyone I speak to clearly feels enormous pride at having served their country and contributed to the fight against fascism. And all of them hope that future generations do not need to make similar sacrifices. If their wish is to come true, it is vitally important that these recollections are preserved for as wide an audience as possible. The ongoing project of the Alberta-NWT Command of the Royal Canadian Legion to collect the stories of Alberta veterans is one way to accomplish this goal. By allowing these men and women to share their experiences in their own words, these recognition books provide a window into what it means to be a soldier, and why we continue to honour those individuals’ service. It is a fitting way for the Royal Canadian Legion to mark its 100th anniversary. Please accept my sincere congratulations on reaching this remarkable milestone. Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani, AOE, BSc, LLD (hon) Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Message from the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta THE ROYAL CANADIANLEGION

Military Service Recognition Book Volume XVIII 6 JOYCE CONDON (NÉE APPLEYARD) Joyce was born on August 1, 1924, in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. During the Second World War, all young men and women were required to register for war work at the age of 19. She volunteered to join the WRNS (Women’s Royal Naval Service) and trained as a radio mechanic, learning to diagnose and repair radios, 昀rst for Fleet Air Arm planes and later for the Royal Naval Wireless Station on the northeast coast. While working as a radio mechanic, Joyce helped maintain communication with ships, including hospital ships, around the British Isles, the North Sea, and the Mediterranean. During this time, she endured V1 and V2 rocket attacks, nicknamed “doodlebugs.” After VE Day, she was transferred by troopship to the naval base in Sydney, Australia, to release men for service in the Paci昀c to 昀ght the Japanese. When hostilities ended, she was eventually returned to Britain by troopship. Joyce was demobilised in July 1946. Afterward, she was given the opportunity to pursue post-secondary education. She completed teacher training and met her husband. In 1956, they emigrated to Canada, where they made their home and raised their family. www.abnwtlegion.com 7 JOHN REYNOLDS John Reynolds was born in London, England, in 1930. He grew up during the Blitz and the V1 and V2 air raids. He dropped out of school at the age of 15 and was called up for two years of National Service in 1948. He enjoyed army life and signed on as a regular soldier in 1950. During his service, he was stationed in Singapore, Hong Kong (three tours), West Germany (three tours) during the Cold War, Canada, and Malaysia. He rose through the ranks to Warrant O cer Class 1, was later commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, and retired in 1980 with the rank of Major. Upon retirement, he emigrated to Canada and settled in Medicine Hat, where he immediately joined Robertson Memorial Branch 17 of the Royal Canadian Legion. He served on the Branch Executive for 昀ve years and then ran the annual Remembrance and Decoration Day parades for six years. He was made a Life Member of the RCL in 2006. In 1980, he formed the Medicine Hat United Services Institute. In 2013, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II recognised the institute’s service to the community and granted it the right to use the pre昀x “Royal.” It became known as the Royal United Service Institute of Medicine Hat. LORNE JAMES HARVEY Lorne James (Jim) Harvey served 30 years (1955–1984) in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an avionics technician. After training at CFS Clinton, he was posted to bases across Canada, and eventually retired in Comox, BC. Career highlights include supporting the Golden Hawks, working security at the Montreal Olympics, and 昀ying search and rescue with 442 Squadron. If you 昀nd he’s a little hard of hearing, consider his many hours on the 昀ight line when safety standards weren’t quite what they are today. Jim’s stories include 昀ying a Chipmunk aircraft home from a training 昀ight after his pilot friend had consumed too much alcohol, and arranging an RCAF helicopter “training 昀ight” to get his son’s peewee hockey team from Ottawa to Toronto. Beyond the Air Force, he threw himself into community life: re ng, umpiring, leading scouts, managing hockey, and even driving the zamboni. He helped with the ’67 PanAm Games in Gimli and was instrumental in establishing a credit union in town. At Uplands, he served on the council and Credit Union board. Military service runs in Jim’s family. His sister Helen served in WWII, and his son Randy, son-in-law Michel, and daughter-in-law Alix all served in the RCAF. Granddaughter Paige is currently serving in the RCAF, and grandson Matthieu 昀ies for Delta. Jim is the proud recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal and the Canadian Forces Decoration with Clasp.

Military Service Recognition Book Volume XVIII 14 Robertson was born in Albion Mines, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, on October 26th 1883. Four years later his family moved to Springhill Nova Scotia, where he received his education. In 1889, the Robertsons moved to Medicine Hat Alberta. Singing Pete – As he was known – joined the Canadian Pacific Railway where he worked his way up to Engineer and earned his nickname for his cheerful singing and whistling whether in the cab or at the roundhouse. In 1915, he joined the 13th Canadian Mounted Rifles and later, while in England, transferred to the 27th BN. The bravery that earned him the Victoria Cross made him a legend among the Locomotive Engineers the world over. “For most conspicuous bravery and outstanding devotion to duty in attack. When his platoon was held up by uncut wire and machine gun causing many casualties, PTE. Robertson dashed to an opening on the flank, rushed the machine gun and, after a desperate struggle with the crew, killed four and then turned the gun on the remainder, who, overcome by the fierceness of his onslaught, were running towards their own lines. His gallant work enabled the platoon to advance. He inflicted many more casualties among the enemy, and then carrying the captured machine gun, he led his platoon to the final objective. He there selected an excellent position and got the gun into action, firing on the retreating enemy who by this time were quite demoralized by the fire brought to bear on them. During the consolidation PTE. Robertson’s most determined use of the machine gun kept down the fire of the enemy snipers; His courage and coolness cheered his comrades and inspired them to the finest efforts. Later, when two of our snipers were badly wounded in front of our trench, he went out and carried one of them in under very severe fire. He was killed just as he returned with the second man.” (London Gazette. No 30471. 11 January 1918) TCRCHONOURS OUR TROOPS AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR THEIR COURAGE AND SACRIFICE AT THE CALL OF OUR COUNTRY TEAMSTERS CANADA RAIL CONFERENCE In Honour of Pete Robertson

www.abnwtlegion.com 15 As Alberta’s Liaison to the Canadian Armed Forces, I am honoured to introduce the Royal Canadian Legion Alberta-Northwest Territories Command’s 18th Military Resource Service Recognition Book. Thanks to all those who provided submissions and everyone who made this publication possible. The stories and experiences within these pages remind us the peace and freedoms we enjoy as Canadians should never be taken for granted. They exist because of the dedication, courage, and sacrifice of Canada’s brave women and men in uniform. For that, we owe them our deepest gratitude. Answering the call to protect our country is among the most profound acts of public service. This book stands as a tribute to all Canadian service members, and their families, who have made personal sacrifices so that we may be free to read about such contributions. This commitment requires extraordinary strength and resilience. I hope every reader gains a deeper appreciation for our veterans, and those who continue to serve. May their legacies live on and inspire generations to come. www.abnwtlegion.com 21 THE ROYAL CANADIANLEGION THANKYOU TO THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION COMMAND SERVICE BUREAU OFFICERS Continued  I would like to express my heartfelt Thank You for all that you have done for me. I appreciate all the time and effort that you have put into helping me with applying for my hearing and tinnitus issues. You are wonderful people who made me feel at ease whenever I had to reach out to you, you were patient and understanding to my issues. I know that you are also giving your all in helping active and retired veterans of our military, and for that, again I Thank You and pray God’s blessings upon you both.  I received your letter today, thank you very much for all your work helping me with my claims. It also has been very pleasant working with your assistance, she is a very knowledgeable and efficient lady. Again, thanks for all your work.  I am a Retired Veteran with the Canadian Armed Forces. It doesn’t matter how long I served, what I saw or did or what Branch I served in. If you served, you are a Veteran. After I had been released, my heath and life began to fail to the point of being homeless and I was unable to take care of my self. I was put on Alberta Works but still had to work just to survive. I was always in trouble with daily expenses and had been evicted a few times. I received some help from friends, churches, food banks, and I began going to them for the next few years. I am thankful for that, but it didn’t help improve my living conditions or my situation. During the winter, they gave me hats, gloves or boots, but I was still living in my truck and only surviving day to day. There were times when I was unable to use their help because I could not get there and their delivery was not an option, because I didn’t have a home. Life itself was just not worth the struggle and honestly, I had given up as I was not receiving the resources that I desperately needed. Finally, I had a couch to sleep on but was going to be evicted again and my power shut off then someone suggested I maybe check with the Legion Service Bureau. I sent an email to a Service Officer at the Legion Command Office just asking for help with my hydro and one months’ rent. I got a call from a guy who told me to get down to his office that day and meet with him. Over the next few months, he helped me get a place to live, my bills paid and access to fresh food (I am a diabetic with kidney failure, a bad heart and mental heath issues) and got me enrolled in programs with Veterans Affairs. The staff at the Legion Command Office went above and beyond for me. They helped me fill out loads of paperwork and even proofread my work. They gave me that light at the end of the tunnel for the first time in many years. If I had known that there was help out there years ago, things would not have been so hard for me, and if the Legion had not have done what they do, I would not be here.

Military Service Recognition Book Volume XVIII 22 In collaboration with the Royal Canadian Legion, Saskatchewan Command, we seek to recognize and highlight veterans for the sacrifices made in service of community and country. The legislation that applies to naming plant varieties operates on the principle of “One Variety-One Name”. This affords us the unique, timeless and global opportunity to recognize veterans for the contributions to Canada by naming new crop varieties in their honour. All can participate! The Legion’s Saskatchewan Command will accept applications from all provinces, Canada wide. Since it’s inception, this program has named over 20 new varieties after deserving veterans. www.abnwtlegion.com 23 I’ve learned a lot from the Legion staff. They are there to help you make it day to day, helping you to survive. They do not just put a band aid on someone’s life, they help you repair it, help maintain it and put measures forward so someone has a future. I am getting treatment benefits, case management and will be supported for the rest of my life. The Legion is not just a watering hole for “in my day” story telling servicemen/women. They change lives, and in my case, they saved mine. I salute you and all your staff as should all.  Immense thanks to you and your team for your immediate, and attentive support. I felt completely ashamed, stuck and directionless just two days ago, and now I feel overwhelming graciousness and a great sense of responsibility to be better. This help does much more than help me financially, it gives me breathing room in a time of suffocation. I came out of our chat extremely motivated and inspired. Thanks to everyone at the Command Service Bureau office for their support of us Veterans and particularly for understanding the uniqueness of the Veteran experience. Feeling like someone can understand how a once high performing person can lose control of himself helps me feel seen and understood, and that makes all the difference. Appreciate ya all.  I just want to say thank you for all your help with my Hearing Loss claim. These hearing aids help a lot more than I realized. There's a clearer distinction between words, whereas before they were kind of like a mumbly continuous thing of sorts. For everyone else's benefit, I'm more aware of how loud my own voice is…ha ha, and those spike responses to crinkly things seem to have sorted themselves out a lot better as well. Thanks again for all the help you've given me over this last little while.  Just thought I would update you on all the help you have given me. I did get the additional pain and suffering benefits, and I also received the Income Replacement Benefit, which comes in handy as keeping a job isn’t always easy on the rough days. I cannot thank you enough for what you did for me. I know it is your job, but you went above and beyond, and I will never forget that you saved my life, and I will always remember that.  I would like to express to you how very grateful I am for all your help and the way you treated me, not only me but my entire family, thank you. I do truly appreciate you taking the time to meet with me and answer all my questions. You have spent a significant amount of time with me in person and talking to me on the phone. I seriously am not sure I would have made it through this without your help, as most of the time I was unable to get in touch with anyone, sometimes for weeks at a time. You always answered my phone calls and emails in a timely manner. I felt ashamed and intimidated by just about everyone and everything; it had such a profound impact on my life that I can’t even begin to explain. With you, for the first time in a very long time, I felt as if I had some value, thank you for being you. Ever since I encountered the Canadian Legion, the process has been outstanding, stellar, and the complete opposite of everything I had ever heard or thought about them, and I have developed a very deep respect and appreciation for you and what the Legion does. You are indeed an exceptional person.  Your help with VAC applications and the submission of the appropriate documents was outstanding. Thanks to you I will be receiving a disability pension. In addition, I have received support from the OSI clinic, thanks to you. I can't thank you enough for the support you provided. Your support and understanding are second to none, and you should be proud of what you are doing in support of our veterans. Thank you for your help. www.abnwtlegion.com 25  Thank you again for everything. I cannot thank you enough and you probably saved my life. Between you and the recommended supports, I never would have made it to today. You were the most instrumental person in getting me the help I needed. It is probably help I will need for the rest of my life as the guilt will never go away. At least I feel I have a light at the end of the tunnel. I appreciate you advocating for those of us, who don’t know where to start, and feel we don’t deserve the help. Thank you again for being the friend we need.  I want to thank you for the great work that you have done for me in obtaining the PSC funding. Due to you I have received confirmation and the lump sum funding fromVAC.Thank you again and the best to you and your staff.  Thank you guys so much for all your help to get things going and your patience in me getting the paperwork back to you. I just wanted to let you know how much I really appreciate all the work you and your assistant have done. Thank you guys very much.  Over the past four years I have been dealing with a Command Service Officer on issues I have been having with Veterans Affairs Canada. I was originally directed to the Service Officer by a fellow RCMPVet member and instantly received assistance. The Service Officer is no doubt in my mind very knowledgeable and has taken me down the path towards my issues. I must say that he has been very patient, and my ultimate goal has been reached. I am still in touch with him, and he never ceases to surprise me and is always ready to answer any questions I have. I know he has helped others, and we should all be very appreciative for what he does and has done. Further I also wish to mention the Executive Assistant in the office, as when a person calls the office it all seems to start with her and the assistance she gives to everyone is remarkable.Their good deeds and hard work to members of the public does not go unnoticed. I wish to say WELL DONE AND THANK YOU. MY LIFE HAS BEEN MADE MUCH BETTER.  I just wanted to extend a deep thank you for once again assisting with my tinnitus claim and taking the time and effort with the process of getting it completed. I truly appreciate all that you have done for me and my veteran brothers and sisters, you are a true advocate for us all. Thanks Again!  As my hearing loss claim comes to a successful conclusion, I'd like to thank you all for your help on my behalf. While your efforts may go un-heralded by some, those that you've helped, like myself, remain grateful.  I want to thank you for recommending your hearing clinic. You are correct, I haven't experienced customer service like that for years. I am now fitted with hearing aids and feeling great. They definitely go the extra mile. Thanks again for your assistance. I very much appreciate it.  I just want say thank you, I’m truly excited that I might be able to get help and answers. You are truly a god send! I wish we all could be as strong and as dedicated as you are. I’m now hopeful for the future, our talk was very enlightening.  I was talking to a Branch Member yesterday, and he told me how impressed he was with the service he is getting from you.
