THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND www.abnwtlegion.com 1 I am pleased to welcome you to the 17th edition of the Royal Canadian Legion AlbertaNWT Command’s Military Resource Service Recognition Book. Because the stories and photographs contained in this collection were submitted by family and friends of veterans, and often by the veterans themselves, they are all the more powerful and immediate. They provide a vivid picture of the sacrifices and rewards that are part of military service. I have always been proud to represent the Crown and accept the First Poppy during the presentation ceremony in Alberta, which officially launches the Legion’s annual Poppy Campaign. It is always an emotional event, one that inspires everyone in attendance to reflect on the men and women who died upholding Canada’s ideals and aiding our allies around the world. I am sure this book will have a similar effect on everyone who reads it. As His Majesty the King’s representative in Alberta, I extend my gratitude to the Legion for its countless ongoing efforts to support, house, and advocate on behalf of Canada’s veterans, and to preserve their legacy for future generations. Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani, AOE, BSc, LLD (hon) Lieutenant Governor of Alberta

Military Service Recognition Book Volume XVII 10 Robertson was born in Albion Mines, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, on October 26th 1883. Four years later his family moved to Springhill Nova Scotia, where he received his education. In 1889, the Robertsons moved to Medicine Hat Alberta. Singing Pete – As he was known – joined the Canadian Pacific Railway where he worked his way up to Engineer and earned his nickname for his cheerful singing and whistling whether in the cab or at the roundhouse. In 1915, he joined the 13th Canadian Mounted Rifles and later, while in England, transferred to the 27th BN. The bravery that earned him the Victoria Cross made him a legend among the Locomotive Engineers the world over. “For most conspicuous bravery and outstanding devotion to duty in attack. When his platoon was held up by uncut wire and machine gun causing many casualties, PTE. Robertson dashed to an opening on the flank, rushed the machine gun and, after a desperate struggle with the crew, killed four and then turned the gun on the remainder, who, overcome by the fierceness of his onslaught, were running towards their own lines. His gallant work enabled the platoon to advance. He inflicted many more casualties among the enemy, and then carrying the captured machine gun, he led his platoon to the final objective. He there selected an excellent position and got the gun into action, firing on the retreating enemy who by this time were quite demoralized by the fire brought to bear on them. During the consolidation PTE. Robertson’s most determined use of the machine gun kept down the fire of the enemy snipers; His courage and coolness cheered his comrades and inspired them to the finest efforts. Later, when two of our snipers were badly wounded in front of our trench, he went out and carried one of them in under very severe fire. He was killed just as he returned with the second man.” (London Gazette. No 30471. 11 January 1918) TCRCHONOURS OUR TROOPS AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR THEIR COURAGE AND SACRIFICE AT THE CALL OF OUR COUNTRY TEAMSTERS CANADA RAIL CONFERENCE In Honour of Pete Robertson

Military Service Recognition Book Volume XVII 18 Alberta-NWT Command THANKYOU TO THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION SERVICE BUREAU OFFICERS Following are a few humble words from Veterans that our Service Officers have assisted and made a difference in their lives. I am a Retired Veteran with the Canadian Armed Forces. It doesn’t matter how long I served, what I saw or did or what Branch I served in. If you served, you are a Veteran. After I had been released, my heath and life began to fail to the point of being homeless and I was unable to take care of my self. I was put on Alberta Works, but still had to work just to survive. I was always in trouble with daily expenses and had been evicted a few times. I received some help from friends, churches, food banks, and I began going to them for the next few years. I am thankful for that, but it didn’t help improve my living conditions or my situation. During the winter, they gave me hats, gloves or boots, but I was still living in my truck and only surviving day to day. There were times when I was unable to use their help because I could not get there and their delivery was not an option, because I didn’t have a home. Life itself was just not worth the struggle and honestly, I had given up as I was not receiving the resources that I desperately needed. Finally, I had a couch to sleep on but was going to be evicted again and my power shut off then someone suggested I maybe check with the Legion Service Bureau. I sent an email to a Service Officer at the Legion Command Office just asking for help with my hydro and one months’ rent. I got a call from a guy who told me to get down to his office that day and meet with him. Over the next few months, he helped me get a place to live, my bills paid and access to fresh food (I am a diabetic with kidney failure, a bad heart and mental heath issues) and got me enrolled in programs with Veterans Affairs. This staff at the Legion Command Office went above and beyond for me. They helped me fill out loads of paperwork and even proofread my work. They gave me that light at the end of the tunnel for the first time in many years. If I had known that there was help out there years ago, things would not have been so hard for me and if the Legion had not have done what they do, I would not be here. I’ve learned a lot from the Legion staff. They are there to help you make it day to day, helping you to survive. They do not just put a band aid on someone’s life, they help you repair it, help maintain it and put measures forward so someone has a future. I am getting treatment benefits, case management and will be supported for the rest of my life. The Legion is not just a watering hole for “in my day” story telling Servicemen/women. They change lives, and in my case, they saved mine. I salute you and all your staff as should all. Continued
www.abnwtlegion.com 19 Immense thanks to you and your team for your immediate, and attentive support. I felt completely ashamed, stuck and directionless just two days ago, and now I feel overwhelming graciousness and a great sense of responsibility to be better. This help does much more than help me financially, it gives me breathing room in a time of suffocation. I came out of our chat extremely motivated and inspired. Thanks to everyone at the Command Service Bureau office for their support of us Veterans and particularly for understanding the uniqueness of the Veteran experience. Feeling like someone can understand how a once high performing person can lose control of himself helps me feel seen and understood, and that makes all the difference. Appreciate ya all. I just want to say thank you for all your help with my Hearing Loss claim. These hearing aids help a lot more than I realized. There's a clearer distinction between words, whereas before they were kind of like a mumbly continuous thing of sorts. For everyone else's benefit, I'm more aware of how loud my own voice is…ha ha, and those spike responses to crinkly things seem to have sorted themselves out a lot better as well. Thanks again for all the help you've given me over this last little while. Just thought I would update you on all the help you have given me. I did get the additional pain and suffering benefits, and I also received the Income Replacement Benefit, which comes in handy as keeping a job isn’t always easy on the rough days. I cannot thank you enough for what you did for me. I know it is your job, but you went above and beyond, and I will never forget that you saved my life, and I will always remember that. I would like to express to you how very grateful I am for all your help and the way you treated me, not only me but my entire family, thank you. I do truly appreciate you taking the time to meet with me and answer all my questions. You have spent a significant amount of time with me in person and talking to me on the phone. I seriously am not sure I would have made it through this without your help, as most of the time I was unable to get in touch with anyone, sometimes for weeks at a time. You always answered my phone calls and emails in a timely manner. I felt ashamed and intimidated by just about everyone and everything; it had such a profound impact on my life that I can’t even begin to explain. With you, for the first time in a very long time, I felt as if I had some value, thank you for being you. Ever since I encountered the Canadian Legion, the process has been outstanding, stellar, and the complete opposite of everything I had ever heard or thought about them, and I have developed a very deep respect and appreciation for you and what the Legion does. You are indeed an exceptional person. Your help with VAC applications and the submission of the appropriate documents was outstanding. Thanks to you I will be receiving a disability pension. In addition, I have received support from the OSI clinic, thanks to you. I can't thank you enough for the support you provided. Your support and understanding are second to none, and you should be proud of what you are doing in support of our veterans. Thank you for your help. Thank you again for everything. I cannot thank you enough and you probably saved my life. Between you and the recommended supports, I never would have made it to today. You were the most instrumental person in getting me the help I needed. It is probably help I will need for the rest of my life as the guilt will never go away. At least I feel I have a light at the end of the tunnel. I appreciate you advocating for those of us, who don’t know where to start, and feel we don’t deserve the help. Thank you again for being the friend we need. THANKYOU TO THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION SERVICE BUREAU OFFICERS (continued)

www.abnwtlegion.com 23 It is believed that Poliomyelitis has been eradicated in Canada, which is primarily true, but even though the first effective vaccine was developed in 1955, like many viruses, it can reappear at any time. Today, we still see the debilitating effects of this disease, which struck several decades ago, worsen over time. The Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Foundation for Poliomyelitis and Rehabilitation was sponsored by the Alberta Command of The Royal Canadian Legion in 1953 and was registered as a Society on May 25, 1961. At that time, the Directors consisted of members of the Executive Committee of the Command. Currently, the Senior Executive Committee of the Alberta-NWT Command continues the tradition of sitting on the Board of Directors of the Foundation. Command Service Officers are the point of first contact. They assist clients with completing financial needs forms and request the appropriate documentation from medical professionals before applications for funds are submitted to the Board. Whenever possible and appropriate, cost sharing with other agencies is examined. Our clients range in age from 40 years and up. We still find new clients with referrals coming from medical professionals, family and current clients. Our client list continues to evolve with some individuals not requiring assistance for many years, while others continue to need on-going support. Many of the individuals we assist live on government subsidies, which puts them below the poverty line. These clients are provided with special monthly assistance grants to help them with necessities, over and above the special equipment they need. Over time, the effects of the disease worsen and their need for more and costly equipment increases. We strive to help individuals remain active in their communities. We fund this Charitable Foundation three (3) ways. A percentage from the sale of pull tickets is allocated to the Foundation. The second form of funding comes directly from an annual casino. The final source of revenue comes from donations, primarily from Ladies Auxiliaries. It is imperative that we continue to honour our commitment assisting individuals who suffer from Post Poliomyelitis. Branches are encouraged to include the Foundation when donating gaming funds to charities. If you are interested in donating, please make your cheque payable to the Polio Foundation, Alberta Chapter and mail it to our office at 2020 – 15 Street NW Calgary, AB T2M 3N8.
