THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND www.abnwtlegion.com 1 Message from the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta As Her Majesty the Queen’s representative in Alberta, it is my pleasure to congratulate the Royal Canadian Legion Alberta-NWT Command on the 13th edition of the Military Service Recognition Book. The stories included in this valuable resource remind us all of the essential contributions and considerable sacrifices offered through the years by our Canadian men and women in uniform. They have played an essential role in defending the peace, freedom and democracy that we are privileged to enjoy, and we owe it to them to celebrate and remember all that they have contributed to our way of life. I trust that everyone who reads this book will find renewed appreciation for our military heroes and I offer my sincere appreciation to all those who support this program. I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our remarkable veterans and current serving members of the Canadian Forces for your essential service to our country. Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani AOE, B.Sc. Lieutenant Governor of Alberta

As the artillery barrages began to churn the earth in late 1914, the fields of Flanders and northern France saw scores of red poppies appear. The first “poppy day” in Canada occurred on 11 November 1921. By 1922, lapel-worn poppies were manufactured and distributed by veterans in Canada. The Royal Canadian Legion, formed in 1925, has run the poppy fundraising campaign in Canada ever since. Today, millions of Canadians wear the bright red emblem as a symbol of remembrance, leading up to and on 11 November. The Poppy campaign raises funds to support veterans and their families. www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca MESSAGES Lieutenant Governor . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1 Premier of Alberta . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .7 Premier of the Northwest Territories . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .9 President of Alberta-NWT Command . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .11 Government of AB Liaison to the Canadian Armed Forces . . . .13 LEGION INFORMATION Command Executives and Staff . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .15 The Royal Canadian Legion Service Bureau . . . . . . . . . .17 Canadian Foundation for Poliomyelitis and Rehabilitation .19 Bursaries - Terms of Reference . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .21 Do You Have Time To Give Back? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .23 Volunteer Application Form . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .25 Application for Membership . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .29 How Do I Get My Service Records? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .31 How Do I Get My Replacement Medals? . . . . . . . . . . . . .31 Youth Remembrance Contests . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .35 2019 Literary and Poster Contest . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .37 VETERANS Accarias, Louis . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .77 Allan, Walter Henry . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .77 Alseth, Arvid . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .77 Alseth, Ralph . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .79 Ames, Glenn Herbert . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .79 Ames, Samuel . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .81 Anderson, Alfred . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .81 Anderson, Arthur . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .83 Anderson, Elmer Elias . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .83 Anderson, Harold Walter . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .83 Anderson, James S. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .85 Anderson, Jordan . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .85 Anderson, Norman . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .85 Anderson, Svend Aage . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .87 Anhill, Joseph . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .87 Annebo, Arthur . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .87 Appleyard, George . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .89 Appleyard, John . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .89 Appleyard, Richard Henry . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .91 Archer, Leslie Herbert . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .91 Austin, William Charles . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .93 Bankiner, Alfred . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .93 Barret, John . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .93 Barrett, Roger . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .95 Baskerville, John . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .95 Bechtold, Irvine Frank . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .97 Beek, Dora . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .97 Behrens, Adolph . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .99 Beitz, E. www.abnwtlegion.com 7 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND Hon Jason Kenney, Premier of Alberta On behalf of the Government of Alberta, it is my pleasure to congratulate The Royal Canadian Legion Alberta-Northwest Territories Command on the 13th edition of the Military Service Recognition Book. The stories in this book are an important part of Canada’s history, as we pay tribute to the courage of those who served, and continue to serve, our county. Our brave men and women in uniform have stood in our stead in conflict, in peacekeeping, and in the face of disaster. These reflections are a wonderful way to ensure we never forget what they have sacrificed for us. We are forever grateful to our active members and veterans for preserving our freedoms and putting themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe. Thank you to the Alberta-NWT command for working hard to serve these folks and their families, and to all those who made this publication possible. Best wishes, MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER OF ALBERTA

www.abnwtlegion.com 19 It is believed that Poliomyelitis has been eradicated in Canada, which is primarily true, but even though the first effective vaccine was developed in 1955, like many viruses, it can reappear at any time. Today, we still see the debilitating effects of this disease, which struck children several decades ago, worsen over time. The Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Foundation for Poliomyelitis and Rehabilitation was sponsored by the Alberta Command of The Royal Canadian Legion in 1953 and was registered as a Society on May 25, 1961. At that time, the Directors consisted of members of the Executive Committee of the Command. Currently, the Senior Executive Committee of the Alberta-NWT Command continues the tradition of sitting on the Board of Directors of the Foundation. Command Service Officers are the point of first contact. They assist clients with completing financial needs forms and request the appropriate documentation from medical professionals before applications for funds are submitted to the Board. Whenever possible and appropriate, cost sharing with other agencies is examined. Our clients range in age from 40 years and up. We still find new clients with referrals coming from medical professionals, family and current clients. Our client list continues to evolve with some individuals not requiring assistance for many years, while others continue to need support. Many of the individuals we assist live on government subsidies, which puts them below the poverty line. These victims are provided with special monthly assistance grants to help them with necessities, over and above the special equipment they need. Over time, the effects of the disease worsen and the need for more and costly equipment increases. We strive to help individuals remain active in their communities. We fund this Charitable Foundation three (3) ways. A percentage from the sale of pull tickets is allocated to the Foundation. The second form of funding comes directly from an annual casino. The final source of revenue comes from donations, primarily from Ladies Auxiliaries. It is imperative that we continue to honour our commitment assisting those who suffer from Post Poliomyelitis. Branches are encouraged to include the Foundation when donating gaming funds to charities. If you are interested in donating, please make your cheque payable to the Polio Foundation, Alberta Chapter and mail it to our office at 2020 – 15 Street NW Calgary, AB T2M 3N8.
