THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND www.abnwtlegion.com 1 Message from the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta As Her Majesty, The Queen’s representative in Alberta, it’s my pleasure to congratulate the Alberta-Northwest Territories Command of The Royal Canadian Legion on this valuable publication in honour of our amazing men and women in uniform. The Military Resource Service Recognition Book gives us the opportunity to learn from the compelling stories of brave Canadians who have dedicated themselves to ensuring peace and freedom for us all. This is a wonderful way to ensure that their essential contributions to our country are honoured, today and for generations to come. Thank you to everyone at the Legion for your ongoing dedication to this project, and for the many other important programs that you offer throughout the year. To all current serving members and veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces, I extend my heartfelt thanks to you for your invaluable service on behalf of a grateful nation. Military Service Recognition Book Volume XII 12 The YMCA Poppy Connection The YMCA has a deep history of supporting and honouring our soldiers. It was Miss Moina Michael, of the Overseas YMCA Secretaries, that, after reading John McCrae’s poem, In Flanders Fields, resolved to wear a poppy every year in memory of the millions who died on the battlefield. In 1920, Miss Michael met Madame E. Guérin at the YMCA at Columbia University. After their meeting, Madame Guérin began selling handmade poppies around Armistice Day to raise money for impoverished children in the war-torn areas of Europe. Madame Guérin later visited Canada and convinced the Great War Veterans Association (predecessor to the Royal Canadian Legion) to adopt the poppy as a symbol of remembrance in aid of fundraising. In 1921, poppies were first distributed in Canada, thus beginning the tradition of wearing a poppy on November 11. YMCA of Northern Alberta Edmonton | Grande Prairie | Wood Buffalo YMCA involvement in WorldWar I often meant setting up frontline ‘Y Huts.’ Huts in Vimy, France, like the one shown here, provided a broad range of morale-boosting services including meals, recreation activities, and education. www.abnwtlegion.com 19 It is believed that Poliomyelitis has been eradicated in Canada, which is primarily true, but even though the first effective vaccine was developed in 1955, like many viruses, it can reappear at any time. Today, we still see the debilitating effects of this disease, which struck children several decades ago, worsen over time. The Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Foundation for Poliomyelitis and Rehabilitation was sponsored by the Alberta Command of The Royal Canadian Legion in 1953 and was registered as a Society on May 25, 1961. At that time, the Directors consisted of members of the Executive Committee of the Command. Currently, the Senior Executive Committee of the Alberta-NWT Command continues the tradition of sitting on the Board of Directors of the Foundation. Command Service Officers are the point of first contact. They assist clients with completing financial needs forms and request the appropriate documentation from medical professionals before applications for funds are submitted to the Board. Whenever possible and appropriate, cost sharing with other agencies is examined. Our clients range in age from 40 years and up. We still find new clients with referrals coming from medical professionals, family and current clients. Our client list continues to evolve with some individuals not requiring assistance for many years, while others continue to need support. Many of the individuals we assist live on government subsidies, which puts them below the poverty line. These victims are provided with special monthly assistance grants to help them with necessities, over and above the special equipment they need. Over time, the effects of the disease worsen and the need for more and costly equipment increases. We strive to help individuals remain active in their communities. We fund this Charitable Foundation three (3) ways. A percentage from the sale of pull tickets is allocated to the Foundation. The second form of funding comes directly from an annual casino. The final source of revenue comes from donations, primarily from Ladies Auxiliaries. It is imperative that we continue to honour our commitment assisting those who suffer from Post Poliomyelitis. Branches are encouraged to include the Foundation when donating gaming funds to charities. If you are interested in donating, please make your cheque payable to the Polio Foundation, Alberta Chapter and mail it to our office at 2020 – 15 Street NW Calgary, AB T2M 3N8. www.abnwtlegion.com 39 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND YOUTH REMEMBRANCE CONTESTS As one of our primary goals, fostering Remembrance is a part of everything The Royal Canadian Legion does. Thanks to the longstanding tradition of the Annual Literary and Poster Contests, we have been able to involve Canadian school children in helping promote not only the National Remembrance Day Service, but also the act of honouring our military heritage. The Legion encourages schools to contact their local Royal Canadian Legion Branch for details on coordinating the Literary and Poster Contests. Each year, the contests are divided into four categories: • Senior – grades 10, 11, 12 • Intermediate – grades 7, 8, 9 • Junior – grades 4, 5, 6; and • Primary – grades 1, 2 and 3 (Poster Contest only) The Poster Contest is divided into Colour and Black & White divisions. The Literary Contest is divided into Essay and Poem divisions. Students may enter as many contests as they wish but may submit only one entry for each category. Deadlines for entries in the Poster and Literary Contests are determined by the local Legion branches. Please contact your Legion Branch for details. Prizes The winning entries for the four categories (school grades) are displayed at the Canadian War Museum from July 1 to May 1 of the following year. For the poster contest, the second place winners, and any receiving an Honourable Mention, are also displayed in the foyer of the House of Commons during the annual Remembrance period in November. As well, the Legion sponsors a trip to Ottawa for the Senior winners in the four contests to attend the National Remembrance Day Service where they place a wreath on behalf of the youth of Canada. They also have an opportunity to meet and visit with the Governor General. Judging Initial judging takes place at the Branch and then the District levels. The winning entries progress to judging at the Provincial Command level. From here, the winning entries are forwarded to Dominion Command in Ottawa where they are judged and the national winners are then declared. The national winning entries, along with the names of the entrants, are published in the Winners Booklet sent to all Branches and posted on Dominion Command’s website www.legion.ca.
