THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND www.abnwtlegion.com 1 Message from the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta As Her Majesty the Queen’s representative in Alberta, it’s my pleasure to thank everyone at The Royal Canadian Legion Alberta-NWT Command for your longstanding commitment to honouring the important contributions of our men and women in uniform through this annual tribute. Our veterans gave their all in the name of peace, freedom and justice, and they continue to foster the best possible quality of life for their fellow citizens as dedicated community leaders and volunteers. This 11th edition of the Military Service Recognition Book is a wonderful reminder of the dedication and sacrifice offered by our Canadian heroes over the years in the defence of principles that stand at the heart of who we are as a country. To current serving members and veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do and for the tremendous pride you instill in your fellow Albertans and all Canadians. Her Honour, the Honourable Lois E. Mitchell, CM, AOE, LLD Lieutenant Governor of Alberta

Military Service Recognition Book Volume XI 6 WE WILL NEVER FORGET THEM. It has been one hundred years and still we remember the hundreds of thousands of young Canadians who put everything on the line at Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele. They came from across Canada and sacri昀ced all they were and all they would ever be. Their spirit forged what it means to be Canadian. Local 47 proudly salutes the indomitable spirit and legacy of Canada’s 昀ghting men and women.

www.abnwtlegion.com 7 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND A MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF ALBERTA The Government of Alberta is pleased to send greetings to the readers of the 11th edition of The Royal Canadian Legion Alberta-Northwest Territories Command Military Service Recognition Book. To serve in the military requires commitment, perseverance and sacrifice, which deserve to be acknowledged by all of us who benefit from the peace and freedom Canada’s armed forces work so hard to defend. Alberta is proud of the brave personnel from our province and the Northwest Territories who have served and those who continue to risk their lives on our behalf around the globe. This book demonstrates our appreciation and helps provide support to our service people, and reminds us that we can make a difference in their lives. Thank you to the Alberta-Northwest Territories Command of The Royal Canadian Legion for its ongoing efforts to enrich military communities and recognize the contributions of serving members, veterans and their families. Thank you as well to the local member legions that provide services to our Canadian heroes. We are grateful for your service, and we will always remember.

THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND www.abnwtlegion.com 9 Message from Honourable Robert R. McLeod Premier of the Northwest Territories On behalf of Government of the Northwest Territories, I would like to recognize all current and former serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces, the Commonwealth or Allied Forces and congratulate the Alberta-NWT Command of The Royal Canadian Legion for their work to make the 11th edition of the Military Resource Service Recognition Book possible. The stories of those profiled in this important and meaningful resource provides a small glimpse into the lives of those amongst us who have chosen to serve their communities and country as part of the armed forces family. In the Northwest Territories many of the individuals listed and profiled in the 11th edition of Military Service Recognition Book are integral members of our communities, having grown up here or relocated here. Many of them go well beyond official service responsibilities and are actively involved in all aspects of community life, enriching our communities all the while. I wish to commend the Alberta-NWT Command of The Royal Canadian Legion for their continued support of our veterans and active members, and once again thank all those in this year’s Military Service Recognition Book for their service. The Honourable Robert (Bob) McLeod Premier of the Northwest Territories

Military Service Recognition Book Volume XI 14 The YMCA Poppy Connection The YMCA has a deep history of supporting and honouring our soldiers. It was Miss Moina Michael, of the Overseas YMCA Secretaries, that, after reading John McCrae’s poem, In Flanders Fields, resolved to wear a poppy every year in memory of the millions who died on the battlefield. In 1920, Miss Michael met Madame E. Guérin at the YMCA at Columbia University. After their meeting, Madame Guérin began selling handmade poppies around Armistice Day to raise money for impoverished children in the war-torn areas of Europe. Madame Guérin later visited Canada and convinced the Great War Veterans Association (predecessor to the Royal Canadian Legion) to adopt the poppy as a symbol of remembrance in aid of fundraising. In 1921, poppies were first distributed in Canada, thus beginning the tradition of wearing a poppy on November 11. YMCA of Northern Alberta Edmonton | Grande Prairie | Wood Buffalo YMCA involvement in WorldWar I often meant setting up frontline ‘Y Huts.’ Huts in Vimy, France, like the one shown here, provided a broad range of morale-boosting services including meals, recreation activities, and education. Military Service Recognition Book Volume XI 18 FROM A FRIEND OF THE VETERANS Scott Kirker Lest We Forget

www.abnwtlegion.com 19 It is believed that Poliomyelitis has been eradicated in Canada, which is primarily true, but even though the first effective vaccine was developed in 1955, like many viruses, it can reappear at any time. Today, we still see the debilitating effects of this disease, which struck children several decades ago, worsen over time. The Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Foundation for Poliomyelitis and Rehabilitation was sponsored by the Alberta Command of The Royal Canadian Legion in 1953 and was registered as a Society on May 25, 1961. At that time, the Directors consisted of members of the Executive Committee of the Command. Currently, the Senior Executive Committee of the Alberta-NWT Command continues the tradition of sitting on the Board of Directors of the Foundation. Command Service Officers are the point of first contact. They assist clients with completing financial needs forms and request the appropriate documentation from medical professionals before applications for funds are submitted to the Board. Whenever possible and appropriate, cost sharing with other agencies is examined. Our clients range in age from 40 years and up. We still find new clients with referrals coming from medical professionals, family and current clients. Our client list continues to evolve with some individuals not requiring assistance for many years, while others continue to need support. Many of the individuals we assist live on government subsidies, which puts them below the poverty line. These victims are provided with special monthly assistance grants to help them with necessities, over and above the special equipment they need. Over time, the effects of the disease worsen and the need for more and costly equipment increases. We strive to help individuals remain active in their communities. We fund this Charitable Foundation three (3) ways. A percentage from the sale of pull tickets is allocated to the Foundation. The second form of funding comes directly from an annual casino. The final source of revenue comes from donations, primarily from Ladies Auxiliaries. It is imperative that we continue to honour our commitment assisting those who suffer from Post Poliomyelitis. Branches are encouraged to include the Foundation when donating gaming funds to charities. If you are interested in donating, please make your cheque payable to the Polio Foundation, Alberta Chapter and mail it to our office at 2020 – 15 Street NW Calgary, AB T2M 3N8.
