THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND www.abnwtlegion.com 1 Message from the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta As Her Majesty, the Queen’s representative in Alberta it is my sincere pleasure to congratulate the AlbertaNorthwest Territories Command of The Royal Canadian Legion on publishing the 10th edition of the Military Resource Service Recognition Book. I offer my admiration and appreciation to everyone at The Royal Canadian Legion for all your contributions to fostering a greater awareness and understanding for our history. I believe the best way to understand the past is to put ourselves in the shoes of those who lived it. I trust that the information and stories offered in this book will go a long way toward helping our citizens and communities recognize and support our men and women in uniform and learn about their role in our history. I would like to thank everyone at the Alberta-Northwest Territories Command of The Royal Canadian Legion and your various branches for creating this book. We all benefit from your hard work and are grateful for everything that you do to ensure that our veterans are forever honoured by their fellow Canadians. I would also like to offer my gratitude to all current serving members and veterans of the Canadian Forces for your dedicated service on behalf of our country. Her Honour, the Honourable Lois E. Mitchell, CM, AOE, LLD Lieutenant Governor of Alberta

www.abnwtlegion.com 7 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND Office of the Premier, 307 Legislature Building, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T5K 2B6 Message from Honourable Rachel Notley Premier of Alberta On behalf of the Government of Alberta, it is my pleasure to send greetings to the readers of the 10th edition of the Military Resource Service Recognition Book. I am proud that for a decade this book has supported those from Alberta and Northwest Territories who have served and who are serving in our Canadian military. As Canadian Forces personnel continue to risk their lives around the world for peace and freedom, it is important that we remember the countless sacrifices they have made. This book also reminds us that together, we can make a real difference in the lives of our service men and women, and the families who support them. Recognition and remembrance are small ways we can show our veterans that their sacrifices are not forgotten. I thank the Alberta-NWT Command of The Royal Canadian Legion for your efforts to enrich our military communities and for recognizing the work of our service women and men, our veterans, and their families. I am truly grateful to the Alberta-NWT Command and its member legions for continuing to serve the needs of more than 150 communities. You can be proud that you are making a difference in the lives of true Canadian heroes. Thank you all for your service. Rachel Notley 2018

In the Northwest Territories (NWT), our military personnel, rangers and special constables have always played, and continue to play a significant role in our communities and our history. Their stories deserve to be told and celebrated and I commend the Alberta-NWT Command Legion for publishing this book and providing a place to document this. This book will help preserve the stories and photographs of our veterans and ex-service people for generations to come and provide readers with a sense of pride. Congratulations again and my sincerest appreciation and thanks to the Legion branches across Alberta and the NWT for the exemplary work you do for veterans, their families and our communities. www.abnwtlegion.com 15 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND This year marks the tenth anniversary in our series of Military Service Recognition Books we began publishing in 2009. These unique publications will help future generations recognize the many sacrifices made by our military and service personnel and better understand the purpose and objects of The Royal Canadian Legion. We were able to recognize many thousands of veterans and ex-service personnel during the past ten years, as well as help raise funds for the Legion and its many worthwhile causes. A special “Thank You” goes to everyone who took the time to compose and submit stories. You will recognize your contributions as your stories are told. Please realize, this book would not have been possible without your effort and ongoing contributions. We have to date published all of the stories we have received. As we move forward, we will accept longer submissions and look at publishing different types of information. Full-page articles, acceptable humorous stories, and photos of relatives supporting our military will be considered. We are looking to expand our content, so if you have any suggestions please send them in and we will see if they can be incorporated into the next publication. As we see submissions get fewer each year, we are publishing some for a second time. We do this in order to correct any errors and to ensure that all contributions are recognized. We have no way of contacting everyone who sent us stories in the past, and so unfortunately some contributors may have passed on since their stories were last told. This information may not be reflected in the republished stories. If you wish to update this information please contact us, and we would be happy to adjust our records and perhaps re-publish the story with the updated corrections or information. I would like to thank Command staff, as well as all the branches and members for their tireless work on behalf of our veterans and their families. Thank you for all your help in making this project such a success over the past ten years. The professional expertise of Fenety Marketing has raised funds through the selling of advertising in this book and through a public telephone solicitation process that has helped raise a tremendous amount of financial support for Legion projects in this Command. I hope that everyone has an opportunity to read these personal histories and stories and share some of the enjoyment and satisfaction we experienced in putting this book together. Again, thank you everyone for all your help and effort in collecting and submitting stories and articles for this and our future books. Yours in comradeship, Gary Peters Alberta/NWT Military Service Recognition Book Co-ordinator

www.abnwtlegion.com 35 The tradition began in 1915, when John McCrae, a physician who served in the Canadian Field Artillery, wrote his now famous poem, In Flanders Fields, while he sat on the back of an ambulance looking out over thousands of crosses that marked the graves of soldiers. The YMCA connection begins when Miss Moina Michael, who was working for the Overseas YMCA Secretaries in NewYork City, stumbled on McCrae's poem in Ladies Home Journal, after which she resolved to wear a poppy every year in memory of the millions who died on the battle eld. In 1920, Moina Michael met Madame E. Guérin, a visitor from France, at the YMCA at Columbia University, with whom she shared her resolve. After their meeting, Madame Guérin began selling handmade poppies around Armistice Day to raise money for poor children in the war-torn areas of Europe. In 1921, Madame Guérin visited Canada and convinced the Great War Veterans Association (predecessor to the Royal Canadian Legion) to adopt the poppy as a symbol of remembrance in aid of fundraising. In November, 1921 poppies were rst distributed in Canada. Thus began the Canadian tradition of wearing a poppy on Nov. 11 in memory of those who died on the battle eld in Flanders Fields. YMCA of Northern Alberta The YMCA Poppy Connection YMCA involvement in WorldWar I often meant setting up frontline ‘Y huts.’ Huts like the one shown above in Vimy, France, provided a wide range of morale-boosting services including meals, recreation activities and education.
