Alberta-Northwest Territories Command Military Service Recognition Book Volume IX 2017

THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND www.abnwtlegion.com 1 Message from the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta As Her Majesty, the Queen’s representative in Alberta it is my pleasure to congratulate the AlbertaNorthwest Territories Command of The Royal Canadian Legion in publishing the 9th edition of the Military Resource Service Recognition Book. This inspiring tribute is a wonderful way to recognize and support our men and women in uniform. The Royal Canadian Legion has continually played a significant role in our province by providing vital encouragement, support, strength and friendship to our soldiers and our communities. As this year marks Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation it is a significant reminder to celebrate our pride in this great nation. This also gives us the opportunity to remember and give thanks for our peace, freedom and democracy which were won through considerable service and sacrifice. I believe that everyone who reads this book will come away with a deeper appreciation of the many benefits we are privileged to enjoy today. I would like to thank everyone at the Alberta-Northwest Territories Command of The Royal Canadian Legion and your various branches for this initiative. I would also like to offer my sincere appreciation and gratitude to all veterans and current serving members of the Canadian Forces for your dedicated service on behalf of our country. Her Honour, the Honourable Lois Mitchell, CM, AOE, LLD Lieutenant Governor of Alberta

www.abnwtlegion.com 7 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND Office of the Premier, 307 Legislature Building, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T5K 2B6 Message from Honourable Rachel Notley Premier of Alberta On behalf of the Government of Alberta, it is my pleasure to send greetings to the readers of the Military Service Recognition Book. For generations, men and women from Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and across Canada have left their homes and loved ones to protect our freedom and defend those who cannot defend themselves. They have served as soldiers, doctors, nurses and other personnel for the good of our country and the rest of the world. This publication pays tribute to the important achievements by true Canadian heroes, and I commend the tremendous efforts of all who contributed to this book. Recognition and remembrance are small ways we can show our veterans that their sacrifices are not forgotten. Through its ongoing support of our brave men and women and their families, the Alberta-NWT Command of The Royal Canadian Legion has given back to those who have given so much to their communities and country. By supporting this project, you are expressing the gratitude felt by Canadians everywhere. My sincere thanks to the Alberta-NWT Command and its member legions for continuing to serve the needs of more than 150 communities. You can be proud that you are making a difference in the lives of true Canadian heroes. Rachel Notley 2017

WWW.abnwtlegion.com 13 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND This book is the ninth in a series of Military Service Recognition Books we began publishing in 2009. These unique publications are dedicated to the thousands of veterans and ex-service personnel who have served this country. This book will also help future generations recognize the sacrifices made during times of conflict, and to better understand the purpose and objects of The Royal Canadian Legion. We have been able to recognize many thousands of veterans and ex-service personnel during the past eight years that we have published these books. A special thank you to everyone who took the time to compose and submit stories. You will recognize your contributions as your stories are told. Please realize, this book would not have been possible without your effort and ongoing contributions. We have caught up and to date have published all of the stories we have received over the past eight years. We try very hard to include as much of the information we receive as possible. Unfortunately, in the past we may have had to leave some information out in order to accommodate as many stories as possible. As we move into this next year we will accept longer submissions and look at publishing different types of information as well. I would like to thank Command staff for their help in making this project such a success. The professional expertise of Fenety Marketing has raised funds through the selling of advertising in this book and through a public telephone solicitation process that has helped raise a tremendous amount of financial support to assist in Legion projects. I would also like to thank the Branches and their members for their tireless work on behalf of our veterans and their families. I hope that everyone has an opportunity to read these personal histories and stories and share some of the enjoyment and satisfaction we have received in putting this book together. Again, thank you everyone for all your help in making this publication possible. Please continue your tremendous effort in collecting and submitting stories for future books. Yours in comradeship, Gary Peters Alberta/NWT Military Service Recognition Book Co-ordinator

Military Service Recognition Book 52 Supporting our communities We are passionate about design. To meaningfully improve the wellbeing of our communities, those that inhabit them and the environment they share. We’ve come together because we see the important challenges facing communities becoming increasingly complex and therefore best engaged through the collaboration of diverse perspectives and expertise. DIALOG has been consciously created as a cross disciplinary collaborative to tackle these challenges. We practice across Canada and beyond from studios in Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary and Edmonton. Our work includes design for urban vibrancy, health and wellness, transportation, arts and culture, retail and commercial, residential, education and research, as well as mixed use solutions incorporating an increasing number of these. DIALOG has been designing positive change in communities since 1960. Although our work has attracted many awards over this span, we consider a project truly successful when it is embraced by its community.
