The Legion branches in Hay River, Yellowknife, Inuvik, Fort Smith and Norman Wells in the Northwest Territories (NWT) continue to provide exemplary work for the Veterans and their communities. These branches were established in the 1940s and we are extremely proud of their many contributions and their volunteerism given over the years to their communities and the Northwest Territories. I commend the Alberta-NWT Command Legion for publishing this book that documents Veterans’ stories. These unique publications are dedicated to the thousands of veterans and ex-service personnel who have served this country. This book will also help future generations recognize the sacrifices made during times of conflict, and to better understand the purpose and objects of The Royal Canadian Legion. We have been able to recognize many thousands of veterans and ex-service personnel during the past eight years that we have published these books. A special thank you to everyone who took the time to compose and submit stories. You will recognize your contributions as your stories are told. Please realize, this book would not have been possible without your effort and ongoing contributions. We have caught up and to date have published all of the stories we have received over the past eight years. We try very hard to include as much of the information we receive as possible. Unfortunately, in the past we may have had to leave some information out in order to accommodate as many stories as possible. As we move into this next year we will accept longer submissions and look at publishing different types of information as well. I would like to thank Command staff for their help in making this project such a success. The professional expertise of Fenety Marketing has raised funds through the selling of advertising in this book and through a public telephone solicitation process that has helped raise a tremendous amount of financial support to assist in Legion projects. I would also like to thank the Branches and their members for their tireless work on behalf of our veterans and their families. I hope that everyone has an opportunity to read these personal histories and stories and share some of the enjoyment and satisfaction we have received in putting this book together. abnwtlegion.com 17 Veterans’ Parking Program On Nov. 5, 2012, City Council passed a recommendation to pilot a special parking program for veterans. This program allows The City of Calgary and the Calgary Parking Authority to recognize veterans for their contribution to creating our great city. Beginning Dec. 1, 2012, veterans with a valid Alberta registered veteran’s licence plate are eligible for a $10-per-month credit for on-street ParkPlus parking. How the Veterans’ Parking Program works: Qualifying veterans can sign up to receive a monthly parking credit through their ParkPlus cell phone account. Instant credit to your ParkPlus cell phone account A ParkPlus cell phone account lets you manage your parking time and payments remotely. Simply go online at www.parkplus.ca, or get help from a ParkPlus representative over the phone 403-537-7275, by email parkplusadmin@calgaryparking.com, or in person at CPA Head Office located at 620 9th Ave. S.W. Then, if you’re eligible to be enrolled in the veteran’s ParkPlus cell phone account option, send an email to parkplusadmin@calgaryparking.comindicating your interest. Each month, your ParkPlus cell phone account will be automatically credited with $10 per veteran’s licence plate. These monthly credits are not refundable or cumulative. For assistance with your ParkPlus cell phone account, please visit www.parkplus.ca or call 403-537-7275. Can I receive parking credits without a ParkPlus cell phone account? For veterans without a ParkPlus cell phone account, please contact our office at 403-537-7000 for further information. The CPA has other special parking benefits just for veterans The Calgary Parking Authority provides complimentary parking on Remembrance Day at any CPA parkade or surface parking lot. This benefit is granted to veterans who have a valid Alberta registered veteran’s licence plate. Veterans do not need to make payment for parking. Simply park and be on your way. For parking lot locations, please visit www.calgaryparking.com. The CPA also offers veterans complimentary parking in Lot 59 located at 200 Memorial Dr. N.W. from Oct. 15 to Nov. 15, so they can visit the thousands of white crosses honouring Southern Albertans who lost their lives to war.
