THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NORTHWEST TERRITORIES COMMAND WWW.abnwtlegion.com 1 Message from the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta It is my honour to congratulate the Alberta-NWT Command of The Royal Canadian Legion on the publication of its Commemorative Branch History Book. This is a wonderful way to recognize the incredible work that is done all over the province by a kind and caring organization. Over the years, with thousands of members and volunteers all over our province, you have taken on a vital role in providing support and advocacy for our men and women in uniform, from the youngest cadets, to our active and reserve units and their families, to our esteemed veterans. Your encouragement inspires our youth into becoming the leaders of our future; your strength lends courage to our troops and their loved ones; your friendship and warmth brings together our communities in remembrance of the sacrifices made for our peace and freedom. You honour and preserve our history, relish the present and ensure Alberta’s strong future. As Her Majesty the Queen’s representative, I thank and salute each and every member and volunteer - past, present and future - for everything that you do and I wish you all the very best for continued success. THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NORTHWEST TERRITORIES COMMAND WWW.abnwtlegion.com 7 Message from Honourable Robert (Bob) McLeod Premier of the Northwest Territories On behalf of the Government of the Northwest Territories, it is my pleasure to extend congratulations to the Alberta-NWT Command Legion for publishing the first edition of the Commemorative Branch History book. In the Northwest Territories (NWT), the local Legion branches provide outstanding work to support the NWT veterans, organize activities during Veterans Week and mark significant anniversaries. Through the work of these local Legion branches, we will always remember the outstanding contributions veterans have made and continue to make to secure the freedom Canadians enjoy. This book collects the history of each branch in the NWT and Alberta and will preserve the heritage, recognize the achievements, and help us to understand the important role volunteers have played in supporting their local branch. My thanks to the Alberta-Northwest Territories Command of The Royal Canadian Legion and all involved in the preparation of this publication. Congratulations on your success in assembling this book and documenting the history of so many Legion branches across Alberta and the Northwest Territories. The Honourable Robert (Bob) McLeod Premier of the Northwest Territories

Military Service Recognition Book 10 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NORTHWEST TERRITORIES COMMAND Comrades, We have come to the end of a new and interesting project that has taken well over a year to complete. There have been a large number of individuals involved, and each has contributed in their own way to the success of this publication. The Command staff was invaluable in collecting and presenting the branches’ histories for this publication. The professional expertise of Fenety Marketing raised funds through the selling of advertising for this book and through a public telephone solicitation process that made this project possible. Proceeds raised by this book will be used to support the many community activities and projects sponsored by Alberta/NWT Legions including Cadets, Bursaries, many Community Service programs and will also be used to aid the branches in their tireless work on behalf of our Command’s veterans and their families. This unique publication is dedicated to the thousands of volunteers who have served their country so well during times of war and peace, and will help future generations better understand the mandate and purpose of The Royal Canadian Legion. A special thank you to all the branch members who took the time to compose and submit their branches histories for inclusion in this book. You know who you are and we send out our sincerest thanks, as this book would not have been possible without your effort. I hope that everyone has an opportunity to read these histories and share some of the enjoyment and satisfaction we have received by putting this book together. Yours in comradeship, Gary Peters Alberta/NWT Military Service Recognition Book co-ordinator

The Service Officers assist with claims under: • Pension Act http://www.vacacc.gc.ca/clients/sub.cfm?source=services • New Veterans Charter http://www.veterans.gc.ca/pdf/deptReports/2009-july-rnvc.pdf • Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca • Veterans Review and Appeal Board (VRAB). THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NORTHWEST TERRITORIES COMMAND WWW.abnwtlegion.com 65 In 1958 a group of Veterans and their friends got together and called for a meeting to discuss the formation of a Royal Canadian Legion for the Oyen area. Some had heard that the old high school dormitory was for sale and could be used as a Legion Hall. It had not been used for a few years as the Acadia School Division had switched over to busing out of town students to school. Ken Munroe made arrangements with his dad to use his garage for the meeting. Members of the group set a date and phoned around, producing a good turnout. Although it was clear the old high school dormitory would need a lot of work to fix it up for a Legion Hall, everyone agreed that it should be done. Numerous suggestions were made as to how to raise money for the purchase, but then Dr. James McCracken suddenly stood up and said “ Boys, if you would all take your right hand and reach into your hip pocket, pull out a $20 bill, we can get started!” That’s exactly what happened. The group raised about $600 that night, sufficient to cover the down payment for the dormitory. The group had to pay $400 a year for 10 years. On April 30, 1958 the papers were signed and the down payment was turned over to the Acadia School Division and that was the beginning of The Royal Canadian Legion in Oyen. Members rotated through the various executive positions except for Norman Evens who has been Branch Secretary for over 50 years, a true and faithful, loyal, and proud member of Acadia Branch 208. In the late 1970s a majority of the members voted to erect a new building. Fortunately, a local boy, concrete man Reg Campbell, could pour the cement and erect a steel building on the Branch’s existing property adjacent to the Hall. The Branch and Ladies Auxiliary members helped with the inside finishing of the building. The new Hall was opened in 1981 without any government grants, just local fundraising and lots of community support. Today, as with most Legions, membership has dwindled a little but some members are still very active. Members still meet regularly, run Poppy Campaigns and have well attended Remembrance Day services. The Hall is the social hub for the Oyen area to this day. Weddings, funerals, anniversaries, and all kinds of parties and meetings keep this Hall busy. Everyone thanks the vision of their Comrades. Acadia Branch 208 207 – 5 Avenue East, Oyen, AB, T0J 2J0
