It’s also my honour to recognize and salute the veterans featured in the book. The stories and the experiences of our Canadian veterans are precious resources that deserve to be preserved through initiatives like this. Their stories serve to remind us of the many benefits we enjoy as citizens of our great nation and they also help us to remember that the peace, freedom and democracy that are hallmarks of our Canadian way of life were won through the considerable service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. These unique publications are dedicated to the many thousands who have served their country so well during times of war and peace. This book will help future generations better understand the sacrifices made during these times of great conflict, and to better understand the purpose and objectives of The Royal Canadian Legion. A special Thank You goes to the staff at the Command office whose suggestions and hard work have helped shape the success of this project. Another special Thank You goes to everyone who took the time to compose and submit stories. There are too many to list, but you will recognize your contribution as your stories are told in this book. You know who you are, and we extend to you our sincerest thanks, as this book would not have been possible without your efforts. Some of the information presented may not be perfect as some of it was submitted in hand-written form and was not always legible, so we had to sometimes guess at what was written. There were also photos submitted over the web without accompanying stories, so I was sometimes left with partial stories and photos without stories. We are at a point where stories are being submitted at a slower pace than previous years. All stories that have been sent in to us should have been published. If you have sent in a story and have not seen it in one of our books, please contact me and I will do a search for it and rectify the situation. The professional expertise of Fenety Marketing again raised funds through the selling of advertising for this book and through a telephone solicitation process that has helped raise a tremendous amount of much needed financial aid to help support veterans as well as other important Legion projects. I would also like to thank the branches and their members for the tireless work they do on behalf of all Alberta and NWT veterans. This program allows The City of Calgary and the Calgary Parking Authority to recognize veterans for their contribution to creating our great city. Beginning Dec. 1, 2012, veterans with a valid Alberta registered veteran’s licence plate are eligible for a $10-per-month credit for on-street ParkPlus parking. How the Veterans’ Parking Program works: Qualifying veterans can sign up to receive a monthly parking credit through their ParkPlus cell phone account. Instant credit to your ParkPlus cell phone account A ParkPlus cell phone account lets you manage your parking time and payments remotely. Simply go online at www.parkplus.ca, or get help from a ParkPlus representative over the phone 403-537-7275, by email parkplusadmin@calgaryparking.com, or in person at CPA Head Office located at 620 9th Ave. S.W. Then, if you’re eligible to be enrolled in the veteran’s ParkPlus cell phone account option, send an email to parkplusadmin@calgaryparking.comindicating your interest. This benefit is granted to veterans who have a valid Alberta registered veteran’s licence plate. Veterans do not need to make payment for parking. Simply park and be on your way. For parking lot locations, please visit www.calgaryparking.com. The CPA also offers veterans complimentary parking in Lot 59 located at 200 Memorial Dr. N.W. from Oct. 15 to Nov. 15, so they can visit the thousands of white crosses honouring Southern Albertans who lost their lives to war.
