THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NORTHWEST TERRITORIES COMMAND WWW.abnwtlegion.com 1 Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta 3rd Floor, Legislative Building 10800 - 97 Avenue Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T5K 2B6 During the past five years, I have served as Her Majesty the Queen’s representative in Alberta and have had the honour of a close association with the Alberta-Northwest Territories Command of The Royal Canadian Legion. I have had the privilege of receiving the province’s “First Poppy” for the yearly campaign, have welcomed soldiers returning home from service abroad and have spoken to various veterans groups and at the Remembrance Day Service at the Butterdome in Edmonton. On behalf of all Albertans, I have been able to express our deep appreciation to veterans for their willingness to step forward to offer ultimate service to their country. The memory of these courageous men and women and their families will always remain in my memory. Congratulations on the creation of this wonderful publication in honour of the sacrifices made by Canada’s brave veterans. This book is a wonderful way to ensure that their stories are remembered for generations to come. My very best wishes to you, always. Norman L. Kwong, CM AOE Lieutenant Governor of Alberta

WWW.abnwtlegion.com 3 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NORTHWEST TERRITORIES COMMAND I feel a great sense of pride and accomplishment with the production of our second Service Recognition book. This book would not be possible without those who took the time to share a story of a loved one or friend; I thank you all! Time has a way of fading our memory. The voice of our last WWI veteran is now quiet. We must continue to pass the torch of remembrance to future generations. It is through the stories of those who have fought and who fight today for our freedom which will keep their memories and sacrifices alive. Generous donations from businesses and residents of Alberta and Northwest Territories made this publication possible; I thank all of them. It is the hope of The Alberta-NWT Command of The Royal Canadian Legion that this book will continue to remind us all of the important part our military has played in shaping Canada. Today the brave men and women of the Armed Forces continue to represent us around the world, and we thank them for their bravery and sacrifices. Darrel Jones Command President Alberta-NWT Command The Royal Canadian Legion

THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NORTHWEST TERRITORIES COMMAND WWW.abnwtlegion.com 9 Message from Honourable Ed Stelmach Premier of Alberta On behalf of the Government of Alberta and all Albertans, I wish to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to the Alberta-Northwest Territories Command of the Royal Canadian Legion for their continued efforts in supporting our veterans by publishing the second volume of the Military Services Recognition Book of Veterans. Canadians share a profound respect and admiration for the men and women of our armed forces as well as a deep gratitude for their sacrifices in helping to protect our way of life. This book is an important tribute to the valour of those who serve in the name of peace, and a reminder of the incredible debt of gratitude and respect we owe to our military, both past and present. Congratulations to the Alberta-Northwest Territories Command of the Royal Canadian Legion for this important piece of our history and best wishes for continued success in the years ahead. Ed Stelmach 2010

Military Service Recognition Book 10

THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NORTHWEST TERRITORIES COMMAND WWW.abnwtlegion.com 11 This book is the second in a three part series of Military Service Recognition Books we will be publishing over the next few years. There were a large number of individuals involved, and each has contributed in their own way to the success of this publication. This publication would not have been possible without the participation of the branches and membership in researching and contributing the stories contained in this book. I would also like to thank Command staff and executive for their help in collecting the required information and their guidance in the decision-making and direction this project was to take. The professional expertise of Fenety Marketing has again raised funds through the selling of advertising in this book and through a public telephone solicitation that has made this publication possible. This fundraising has contributed much needed financial assistance to this command and the many programs it sponsors. I would also like to thank the branches and their members for their tireless work on behalf of our Commands’ veterans, ex-service personnel and their families. This unique publication is dedicated to those who have served their country so well during times of war and peace. This book will help future generations better understand the sacrifices made during these times of great conflict, and to better understand the purpose and objects of The Royal Canadian Legion. A special thank you to all who took the time to compose and submit stories. There are too many to list, but you will recognize your contribution as your stories are told in this book. We have a number of submissions left over from last year, and we have also received some new submissions for this year, so not all can be presented in this publication. With this project continuing, all stories submitted will be considered for future publications and we hope more stories will continue to come in. We have tried to include as much of the information we received as possible and we regret we have had to leave some information out because of space constraints. The selection of stories for this book was done on a random basis to be as fair as possible to everyone who submitted stories and the only consideration was to keep families together. Please rest assured that any stories received before the deadline will be first to be considered in future editions. I hope that everyone has an opportunity to read these personal histories and stories and share some of the enjoyment and satisfaction we have received in putting this book together. Yours in comradeship, Gary Peters Military Service Recognition Book Project Coordinator
