THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NORTHWEST TERRITORIES COMMAND abnwtlegion.com 1 Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta 3 Floor, Legislative Building 10800 - 97 Avenue Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T5K 2B6 As Her Majesty the Queen’s representative in Alberta, it’s my great pleasure to congratulate the AlbertaNorthwest Territories Command of The Royal Canadian Legion on the creation of this very special publication. I’d also like to offer heartfelt thanks to the courageous men and women the book was created to celebrate. While each and every veteran has a distinct story to tell and unique experiences to share, there is one common denominator that links all of those who have served as a member of Canada’s Armed Forces. All veterans have stepped forward to offer the ultimate service to their country. They have bravely accepted considerable risks and hardships and endured long separations from loved ones in order to defend the principles and way of life we hold dear as Canadians. This book is a wonderful way to honour the sacrifices of Canada’s brave veterans and to ensure that their stories are remembered for generations to come. Sincerely yours, Norman L. Kwong, CM AOE Lieutenant Governor of Alberta

abnwtlegion.com 3 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NORTHWEST TERRITORIES COMMAND It is a great pleasure to thank all those people who have contributed to the completion of this book either with their histories or their time. I feel it is certainly appropriate that we salute all veterans, past and present, for their service to our country. Our military is deployed in various conflicts around the world and The Royal Canadian Legion must ensure that Canadians remain aware of and be thankful for their sacrifices. The book allows current legionnaires and the public to put names and faces to those who volunteered to stand up and fight for democracy for all. To all of them I say thank you on behalf of the 50,000 members of The Royal Canadian Legion of the Alberta-Northwest Territories Command. Thank you as well to Fenety Marketing for showing us how to produce such an important piece of history. Don Orr Command President Alberta-Northwest Command

Military Service Recognition Book 8
THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NORTHWEST TERRITORIES COMMAND abnwtlegion.com 9 Comrades, This book is the first in a series of Military Service Recognition Books we will be publishing over the next few years. There were a large number of individuals involved, and each has contributed in their own way to the success of this publication. This publication would not have been possible without the participation of the branches and membership in researching and contributing the stories contained in this book. I would also like to thank Command staff and executive for their help in collecting the required information and their guidance in the decision-making and direction this project was to take. The professional expertise of Fenety Marketing has raised funds through the selling of advertising in this book and through a public telephone solicitation that has contributed much needed financial assistance to this command and the many programs it sponsors. Proceeds raised will be used to improve our services to Veterans and the more than 150 Communities we serve throughout Alberta and the Northwest Territories. I would also like to thank the branches and their members for their tireless work on behalf of our Commandsʼ Veterans and their families. This unique publication is dedicated to the thousands of Veterans and ex-service personnel who have served their country so well during times of war and peace. This book will help future generations better understand the sacrifices made during these times of great conflict, and to better understand the purpose and objects of The Royal Canadian Legion. A special thank you to all who took the time to compose and submit stories. There are too many to list, but you will recognize your contribution as your stories are told in this book. We have seen a very large number of submissions for this book, and not all will be presented in this first publication. With this project continuing for a couple more years, any stories submitted before the deadline this year will be the first to be considered for future publications and we hope more stories will be submitted over the next number of years. We have tried to include as much of the information we received as possible and we regret we have have had to leave some information out because of space constraints. The selection of stories for this book was done on a random basis to be as fair as possible to everyone who submitted stories and the only consideration was to keep families together. Please rest assured that any stories received before the deadline will be first to be considered in future editions. I hope that everyone has an opportunity to read these personal histories and stories and share some of the enjoyment and satisfaction we have received in putting this book together. Yours in comradeship, Gary Peters Coordinator Military Service Recognition Book Project
