About The Royal Canadian Legion

The Royal Canadian Legion began as the Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League. It was an umbrella organization created at the founding convention in Regina, Saskatchewan in early 1926 after a unity conference in Winnipeg in November 1925.

MISSION

The Mission of The Royal Canadian Legion is to serve veterans and their dependents, promote Remembrance and act in the service of Canada and its communities.

The Legion is a non-profit organization that receives no financial assistance from outside agencies. Through dues and fundraising activities branches assist veterans and their dependents, senior and support local community initiatives. Volunteerism is the backbone of the Legion at all levels.

Operation

All levels of the Royal Canadian Legion provide support for veterans. The Legion has been a long time advocate for veterans and seniors, working with Veterans Affairs and The Department of National Defence. The Alberta-N.W.T. Command Service Office assists veterans and currently serving personnel with disability and pension claims. Branches of The Royal Canadian Legion provide more than financial assistance to veterans and their dependents. They provide social activities, sporting events, information, and a place to meet. The sick, elderly and disabled are not forgotten. Committees made up of Branch members regularly visit care facilities and organize special events.

Poppy Trust Funds

It is with the assistance of generous Canadians that The Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Trust Fund assists veterans and their dependants. The Fund is held in trust for the Canadian people and is considered public funds. These funds are strictly controlled.

In the Community

The Royal Canadian Legion has long been a strong presents in communities. It sponsors and supports many youth through Cadets, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, and sports teams. Donations to hospitals, seniors facilities, Stars Air Ambulance, Museums and Cenotaphs, and others.
